Horrible news. Not far from my digs, no less. Iris Chang, author of The Rape of Nanking and a Northern California resident, committed suicide just south of Los Gatos. She was only 37.

Horrible indeed!
I spoke with Iris last year, and well, she was smart and beautiful and talking about writing fiction and she had a whole life to live—
god damn!!!
I chatted her at the NCBA a bit. And I’m just as shocked. She was absolutely passionate about her work.
