I have climbed for 35 years and seen many films but other than "Touching the Void" none even came close to the actual event. The director of this film plays loose and fast with some of the facts but the overall final product generates tension. The photography is outstanding. This director really has a love for (and knowledge of) climbing

As a matter of fact, I do have a dilletantish interest in mountain climbing -- have read books, some specious bits rattling around the noggin. It's one of those activities that I've considered picking up, but have yet to follow through on. Hill climbs and hiking don't really count. :) If some magazine wants to pay me, I'd happily write some crazy 3,000 word feature to take it up. But the chances of that happening are nil. But I was confused as some climbing authority during a recent conversation. So who is to say?

A very happy 2010 to you to, Kathleen! Thanks for taking part in the RT.

Are you a mountain climber, Ed? Not that watching the movies requires wilderness skills, but I wouldn't have guessed. Maybe I should have from the "Fool on the Hill" sections in Sarah's Hall's "How to Paint a Dead Man," although that seems like a stretch even to me.
I haven't seen "Norwand" nor "The Eiger Sanction." But I have seen the vividly clothed bodies hanging from Mount Eiger. They're near the top but not within stretching distance. In the wind they swing from their grips or whatever the person (my guess is they were mostly men, not women)used to clamp onto the towering rock-face.
On another note, here's wishing you great joy in 2010, throughout the decade, and beyond.
