Pretty amazing stuff, Erin. It’s definitely a valid subject for serious writing - I’m not seeing much out there of its ilk. Your piece left me with two distinct impressions:
1) It takes balls to write this stuff (so to speak)
2) It sucks to be stuck in the Northwoods with a slow dialup connection. I can’t explore those sites from home, and I sure as heck won’t try from work.
In the meantime, your writing makes it all clear, and leaves me thinking.

These sites have only recently achieved that sky-rocketing popularity. The phenomenon is only as old as cheap digital camcorders and ubiquitous high-speed Internet. When I stumbled onto YouPorn a few months ago, I found an emotional land mind. These people look like me and my neighbors. They're real. So is what they're doing. The vids are free and available 24-hours-a-day on almost any computer. I'd never seen anything like it. I don't know if I'd use the word "breakthrough," but it's surely porn's newest permutation.

As far as Augustine's "tired riffs" are concerned, I'd love to see where he's doing his comparison shopping. I haven't found much written about watching amateur porn from a woman's point of view.

Hence, I stand tall (and I daresay stark-naked) by this piece of writing.

I really liked this article.

A couple of years ago, I was considering starting up a pay porn site. Being a woman who knew next to nothing about porn....this was a BIG idea. I spent a year researching the "in's and out's" of internet porn. Wow. I learned...um...a lot.

I never did start the site, but I always thought I should write about the whole experience. But now I don't really have to. Erin captures my feeling here so well.

Ed, I'm not asking to be "placated"... I'm questioning the banality of the enterprise; porn-related content is hardly a breakthrough on the net, now, is it?

"I realize this isn’t for everyone. Truth is like that."

Oh my.

"If you want tired riffs on the literary world, go somewhere else."

*...but if you're hankering for some tired riffs on amateur porn...*

(Sound of Steve buzzing off)

This piece is in the service of conveying a larger and underexamined truth, without concern for hits, traffic, or other ridiculous indicators of popularity. If you don't care for it, Steve, buzz off. I'm not here to placate you or anybody else, but to help other talented writers (like Erin) develop their voices. If you want tired riffs on the literary world, go somewhere else.

I just checked Alexa.com. Megarotic is the 23rd most popular site in the world. Youporn is number 38. This is a huge and growing phenomenon. Some intelligent stuff has been written about the implications of Porn 2.0 on the porn industry, but I wanted to write about it on a human level. I wanted to be honest and fresh.

I am a writer.

In my world, you earn those four words far, far away from the land of ivory towers. Human sexuality and the depiction of it are inherent to who we are. What the internet has done to it is stunning. I cannot sniff and look the other way. Some of us writers feel obligated to jump head long into the what wrinkles pristine white brows.

This was a difficult topic. The material is intractable and undeniable. It was even harder to submit it to Ed. He and I went back and forth many times on it. I realize this isn't for everyone. Truth is like that.
