Arch Oboler couldn't "hack" theater because he was a hack. The proceeding of his "Lights Out" programs plots were predicated on people going against basic common sense and doing something monumentally ignorant. For example, with his Magnum Opus "Chicken Heart", the doctor that created the growing flesh monster tells the people in power that they must destroy the monster with guns and artillery before it grows too big. So what do they do? Call him "crazy" and shoot at it with water. Or take "Valse Triste", where the rangers find the wrecked canoe and instead of doing a search for the girls at the nearby cabin where the recluse is terrorizing the girls, one of the rangers refuses to go out of laziness and fannegles(sp?) their way out of a routine query that would have saved lives.
He would also use and exploit the war effort to maintain relevance by producing propoganda plays and when the war ended, the party was all but over for Mr. Oboler.
And his dependence on superbly cheesy lines like, "I won't die! I can't die!" were the things drinking games are made of.
