As usual, I largely disagree with your political analysis, but to consider instead the linguistics. Perhaps because people are so uninformed, so poorly educated (stupid?), they confuse words not only on face value, but in their thinking as well. Shades of grey, or possible mental misconcepts - we oft admire people who are very self-confident. Not hard to mistake that with arrogance. E.g., Reagan was an arrogant primitive buffoon. Americans identified with that. Duh, we don’t know much but we cun kick yer ass, huh huh. Read 1984, or study the Reagan pr guys, same difference.

But to linguistics. GW and Gore in the mass debates of 2000. What quality do we need in our furrin policy? GW - humility. What the vuk? Gore (mumbling) yeah...humilty’s good.

But consider, isn’t humility the ultimate arrogance? The arrogance of Jesus? Yeah, go ‘head crucify me - aint gonna do yah no good. ‘Cause he’s so arrogant, he can afford to be humble. Me, I prefer the quality of dignity; which is (in my confused thinking) similar to Horace’s concept of decorum.
