Last year, a bunch of their stations in North Carolina (and a few other states, I believe) were urging listeners to run bicyclists off the road. For discipline, they had to run commercials telling bicyclists to be safe(!) and give way to cars. Bleh!

Dearest Ninja: Unfortunately, when it comes to obscenity, as seen with the Janet Nipplegate affair, the FCC will only investigate things that involve sexual functions. (See 182 U.S. Code Section 1461. Howard Stern, for example, was nailed through that conduit.) Things like this are par for the course on American radio, skating under the radar of both current indecency and slander laws.

So you're left with a brain-dead media failing to pick up on this story and the only mobilization which will work: making the advertisers, the listeners, and the broadcasters aware of the hate they're supporting. Which might be a good thing. Because if we can't fight through the government conduits, we can find creative ways to tighten the economic noose, oddly enough in the same way that the other side has exploited it. After all, money DOES talk.

I am completely shocked and outraged at this conversation. I cannot believe that listeners support and laugh at this type of outright racist, violent, putrid talk. Not to mention this man's complete disregard for another human being.

I have to say that I was absolutely shocked when I listened to the clip. I cannot believe that some people find this kind of thing funny. They should not be encouraging these racist ideas and spreading them throughout society. I am definitely going to write to the station and I encourage others to do so as well.

The smart way to deal with this is to contact the advertisers of the program and publicize the relationship of the advertisers with this ignorant bullshit.

Just to correct the transcript, the woman's name sounds like Tina (not Steena). Tina is a pretty typical Punjabi name, and a lot of these call centers are in Gurgaon, next to New Delhi, which has a large Punjabi population.

Thanks for bringing it to the notice of people world wide. But the fact of the matter is that Indians working in the call centres are subject to such racial abuse every now and then. People , lets make things clear it ain't jus the cheap labour but also the effeciency of the work force which compels companies to outsource. No company would be outsourcing if the quality of service provided by india was poor. So rather than abusing call centre employees why dont citizens compete through better services.
Though such an act is regrettable, I do not see it lessening in future. The US govt must play a more pro-active role and educate people about out sourcing.I should also bring it to the notice of readers that out sourcing has infact created jobs in UK & USA. At last count it was 20,000 in UK and 140,000 in USA and the number will keep on rising. These jobs however would require to sharpen their skills. The rule is very clear and simple: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. And I am sure that americans are good at what ever they do. So why not move on and look at the brighter side of things.

Business out sourcing is an art of communication technology and you shopuld not be worried about it as one day Mr.Star can also be contracted by a station in India or far east and will be broadcated to its listeners live.

I wont consder the DJ stunt as a response of general US populace. I just read an apology from the station manager in some associated news site who stopped short of cancelling the DJ`s assignment or asking them to apologise. Condoning the act of DJ and dissociating the radio station from it looks like the manager is trying to save him from the burnt of FCC fine. What would have been fitting would be to throw the DJ`s out considering repititive violation of racist abuse on radio.
Just to let American folks know, a typical Indian call centers employees earn in the bracket of $300 - $ 400 per month. Paltry as it may sound, it is doing wonders to the concerned folks.
The age profile is predominantly young english speaking college going students and in lesser number housewives looking at ways to increase family income.
This bracket never had any steady source of income before. They work normally when it is day in the US, which is night time in India. So, comes with the job is added stress of working at night. Whatever the negatives of this job. The plus side is suddenly the rise of young Indians who are confident, connected and dreamers. Wall Street journal has also done a nice article on Indian Call Center workers too.
There is more to those people than just cheap labour.

It is very disheartening and sick to read about these incidents. I wonder what pleasure can a human being derive of such sadistic and unbearable behavior. I guess some kind of regulation should be done. Why do people crib about outsourcing ? I guess a more pragmatic study should be done as to why the companies are resorting to outsourcing. I guess anyone who is against outsourcing should read Charles Darwin's Survival of fittest. I guess some idea is got about it.

No, I am not shocked by this incident - it only strengthens my conviction that the western world is among the most uncivilised societies in the world, which is why they have to go to such pains to prove themselves as civilised.

Thanks for posting this piece. Like some other fellow-Indians pointed out before, the over-reaction and hatred expressed in some of the postings here do not reflect the view of the India community as a whole. That’s not to say that the community is not outraged by this behavior by public personalities … but there is obviously a more civilized and effective method in bringing these 2 to task, than sink to their levels!

IMHO – The unwritten code of conduct that artists ought to adhere to in public broadcasting, should be uniform for people of all races. Minorities feel they could get away with making racial slurs, just because they are minorities and so-called “oppressed folks”. It’s ironic but there are many who have made careers out of this with limited talent!
I think there ought to be something in place that does not let ANYONE get away with any racial slur - be it black, brown, yellow or white!

It's a proven fact that civilizations (just like the stock markets) has it's ups and downs. When einstein, newton, edison and such great people were there it was "civilization growth" for the west. Immediate resignation of RJ is the first reaction any sane person would have. The call is not only abusive, it is full of hatred and discrimination. The same person should be sued by the employer and the amount should go to the lady on the phone.
