  1. Franzen was wiling to do the interview (he just compained about it beforehand in the press). Oprah disinvited him.

IIRC, Franzen never said he wouldn’t go on, he just expressed some ambivelance about the book club and his selection and his words were taken a bit out of context and turned into a big hubbub that ended with Oprah canceling him as an interview subject because she “didn’t want to make him uncomfortable.”

  3. The same thought occurred to me. If Cormac McCarthy can “lower” himself to get the biggest podium for his work, I would think Franzen could have done the same, as distasteful as pandering self-promotion no doubt must be.
