Another great Philip K. Dick novel is destined for cinematic ruin. Keanu “Whoa!” Reeves will star in A Scanner Darkly. Hopefully, director Richard Linklater won’t have him speak that much, although given the talkiness of his other films, I fear the worst. And, besides, who can forget how awful Johnny Mnemonic was?

I’m kind of surprised that it’s taken this long for Scanner to get made into a movie. Like other Dick novels, I think it’ll be hard to pull off, but not quite so hard as some of his other books — like The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldridge.
I wouldn’t be so quick to write it off–Linklater is a fairly interesting director who tries to take some risks. Who knows, he might actually get a decent performance out of Keanu.
Johnny Mnemonic wasn’t as bad as … oh nevermind. Tom Cruise in Minority Report was risky in my book. The guy’s a chickenhead. Keanu, while apearing to be a block of uncarved wood in most of the screen time he’s given to humanity, is not a chickenhead. We can only hope for the best. Hopefully not another “Hardball”.
