  1. Well, anyone to whom “sprawling adventure tales” are “masculine” is gonna have to exclude a lot of women from her field of awareness –most female sf novelists, of course, but there’s sprawl and adventure in Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones, and all sorts of groovy authors.

    There’s probably a fine essay to be written about avoiding Pynchon for gender-related reasons and then discovering one likes his work. Sad that DL’s ain’t it.
